Have you ever had the feeling that sometimes it gets boring to choose which movie to watch at the cinema because they seem to be so similar? Have you ever felt that tedious agony of seeming to be zapping the world to decide which TV channel to stop on to watch a cool story and not waste time? Or have you fallen asleep before even deciding which movie to play on Netflix?
If you’ve been through this, maybe you’ve also questioned who chooses all these movies that we see around?

Well, why did we come into the world?
01. Because we want to watch films from different places and cultures, not always the same, from the same, about the same and with the same.
02. Because they have a mega young and disruptive crowd making films with dense and critical content that make us think and travel in other realities.
03. Because these movies are not arriving here and the little that arrives stays in the street cinema for a week and then disappears from the map (and then we don’t even think about downloading torrents).
04. Because downloading torrents doesn’t help the market and doesn’t encourage more people to continue producing mass and relevant content for our society.
05. Because watching a movie can be learning, living and developing for pure pleasure and curiosity to know the history of the other.
06. And because what we really like is watching movies together, in a different and experiential space, where it is possible to talk about the works and cross perspectives exponentially.
Lora defines itself as a curatorship and independent cinema experience company, with that, we seek to promote access to foreign and national alternative productions, exposing different stories and themes for debate and generating criticism and learning through audiovisual expression.
The central proposal of the whole story is to expand the cinematographic display to new environments, re-signifying the spectator’s experience and presenting a new perspective of contextual immersion through the window of the screen.
And for that, we selected works from all over the world that were not distributed in Brazil (that did not come to the cinema, nor are they on tv channels and neither on Netflix’s loveliness) we subtitled them in Portuguese and presented them to the public in alternative spaces of exhibition, in the experiential events format.
LORA is a Curatorship of Independent Foreign Cinema, which licenses films from all over the world that were not distributed in Brazil, subtitled in Portuguese and commercializes them in cinemas, galleries, museums, theaters or, exhibiting in programs on the streets.
In five years with the company, it operates in the alternative distribution of cinema, through services of curatorship, licensing, subtitling and production of exhibition events.

The program is made up of feature films from different parts of the world, some classics of foreign independent cinema and other unpublished films, debuting or little distributed in Brazil. According to Manuela Fetter, curator of the program, “the curatorship of the films follows the aspect of optimism and lightness, films that invite us to celebrate life and give thanks in a very bon vivant vibe.”

A cinema exhibition programming in a museum on an experiential format, with artistic curation aimed at expanding the senses through the screen’s window.
The program was unprecedented in the city and showed films never distributed in Brazil, providing access and providing a differentiated film experience for the audience of the cultural institute.
2019.
A monthly film club for Escola Fluxo de Fotografia e Cinema in the school’s screening room and to mark the movement in the neighborhood, we held screenings in front of the school at a busy street of the city.
Jan, 2023.
A programming of movie screenings with musical intervention in a museum, sound and performance artists were invited to intervene in the film to create a new perspective for the piece. It wasn’t a live soundtrack event 🙂 It was something else, something weird.
Regarding a closer approach to cultural diplomacy, Manuela is also responsible for managing a team of subtitlers, focused on English, Spanish, German, French and Portuguese, in the development of self-descriptive subtitles for the national market. In the field of subtitling, Lora has already provided services for cinema production companies, national institutes of culture and distribution companies and for local film producers to send their films to international festivals.
